Men too have mammary glands in their breasts. However, when the mammary gland is swollen in males, it is called gynecomastia. This abnormal development of the mammary gland can cause a great deal of hang-ups. Men often undergo breast surgery to remove their breasts and regain their physical and psychological well-being.
What is gynecomastia?
In men, the chest can swell due to hormonal imbalance or even after hormonal therapy such as steroids. Gynecomastia can also be a side effect of certain treatments. Whatever the cause, men can feel psychologically harmed by the presence of small breasts.
There are various forms of gynecomastia:
- Unilateral gynecomastia, that makes the two breasts look asymmetrical. You can see that one breast is more pronounced than the other breast.
- Diffuse, dendritic or nodular gynecomastia. When gynecomastia is nodular, it is very well defined. If it is dendritic, it includes a triangular mass. On the other side, if it is diffuse, it is not defined.
- Finally, gynecomastia can be glandular or attributable to fat. If the swelling is caused by a cluster of fat cells, the surgeon will conduct adipomastia instead.

Gynecomastia: how the procedure works
Before any gynecomastia procedure, you should see the surgeon for an initial consultation. This gives him the opportunity to learn about your desires, aspirations and past history. He will evaluate the area to be treated and decide the best treatment for you.
During the operation, the surgeon must perform a few steps:
- First of all, he'll do liposuction on the fat on your breasts. In fact, he's going to make two small incisions under the armpit and under the mammary fold. The excess fat is then removed with the aid of a thin cannula with a perforated foam tip.
- Then he will reduce the breast gland and make an incision around each areola. Just a very fine semicircular scar will remain after surgery.
- Finally, the skin is re-tightened. If you have a large amount of skin and your skin is not elastic enough, the surgeon may remove excess skin and reconstruct your chest.
- At the completion of the operation, the doctor seals the incisions with sutures and puts a dressing on them.
Gynecomastia: anaesthetic, duration and hospitalization information
Gynecomastia surgery is done under general anaesthesia and without the need for hospitalization. You will go back home on the same day.
This procedure takes about an hour, depending on the amount of breast gland to be removed, but also on the operation associated with the gynecomastia.
Results: Before and After Gynecomastia
The results of the procedure are instantly visible. The mammary gland returns to its natural appearance as a simple bud, and the excess fat is eliminated through liposuction of the fat accumulation in the chest. The final results of gynecomastia treatment will not be immediately visible after the procedure. The permanent result and disappearance of the breasts will occur some weeks after the swelling had gone down and the excess skin had receded. The breast is now in line with the pectoral muscle.
