Causes : what is double chin?

The build-up of subcutaneous fat between the neck and the tip of the chin defines the appearance of the double chin. Fats can also be found in the deeper layers of the muscle of the skin, the platysma.

Where does the double chin come from?

The key cause of double chin is the formation of fatty deposits: dietary, genetic or hormonal factors contribute to the development of these fatty deposits.
These fat cells are almost impossible to get rid of with physical exercise or diet.

Sagging skin can in some cases aggravate a double chin, because the skin and the SMAS (superficial musculo aponeurotic system of the platysma muscle) loose tonicity (less collagen) and elasticity (less elastin).

Fat increases the influence of the gravity: the more the weight increases, the more the skin loosens and distends.

In some instances, a defect in projection or advancement (retrogenesis) can produce a double chin: there is less hard tissue and proportionally more soft tissue, which then causes this effect because they are no longer put under tension by the mandibular projection.

There is often little fat and, in that case, chin cryolipolysis is not efficient.

What are the effects on the double chin?

From an aesthetic point of view, the double chin can negate the natural line between the neck and the face. It can intensify the sagging of the face oval due to gravity.

The cryolipolysis double chin session
