The Elipse™ balloon: Weight reduction in overweight patients without surgery

The Elipse™ balloon is intended for people who are overweight or beginner obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater.

It's a tool that fills the space. Slightly overweight persons respond well to conventional diets and obese can be assisted by bariatric surgery. But there has so far been no satisfying solution between the two.

The main contraindications are as follows:

• A history of bowel obstruction.
• Multiple cesarean section (from 3 Caesareans).
• Previous surgical stomach operation.

• Gastro-intestinal bleeding (ulcer).

The Elipse™ balloon

The Elipse™ balloon is a soft balloon placed in the stomach by a doctor in just 20 minutes.

The patient swallows a capsule which is the deflated balloon attached to a thin tube. Before setting up the Elipse™ ball, you must fast for at least 8 hours.

When the X-ray confirms that the balloon is in the stomach, the physician will fill it with 550 milliliters of water.

The balloon stays in the stomach for about four months, after which the valve unlocks allowing the balloon to empty itself. Its ultra-thin membrane dissolves and is discarded by a natural process.

Nutritional monitoring

The Elipse™ balloon is a great boost to help you lose weight, but it's not magic, and the follow-up of a qualified dietician is critical to accomplish your goal of weight loss.

The ball is a pleasant feeling that allows you to eat less without feeling hungry. The food you eat remains longer in your stomach, so you don't have to eat between meals.

There is no constraint on food. However, in order to maximize your weight loss, the dietician will make suggestions tailored to your body and your goals.

For a month after the elimination of the balloon, the dietician assists you in consolidating your new eating habits, which are essential to ensure your weight loss over the long term.

The smart scale

You receive a smart wireless scale and install Allurion® on your smartphone. The scale connects you to the dietician and allows them to keep track of your progress and offer you support and advice in real time.

Most patients resume normal activity one or two days after the balloon is placed, but some may experience nausea, abdominal cramping and vomiting. However, these symptoms are well regulated with the medication prescribed by the doctor.

During the four months of the program, most people lose between 20% and 50% of their overweight, which is between 13 and 15 kilograms on average. 80% of the weight loss is in the first 3 months.
