Blepharoplasty: treatment of drooping eyelids

Drooping eyelids are mostly associated with signs of ageing. Indeed, with age the skin becomes less elastic and toned and it ends up losing flexibility. The face droops, the eyelids start to droop and the eyes may look puffy.

That being said, this weakening of the eyelids may also be due to certain external factors, such as tobacco, alcohol or lack of sleep. Genetics can also be a component in this. This may be the case when your brow ridge makes your eye look droopy.

On the day of the blepharoplasty procedure, the surgeon will implement the best methods. Nevertheless, he is going to follow some basic steps:

• He will perform a few cutaneous incisions on the lower and upper eyelids. As a consequence, the scars will be concealed between the mobile and fixed part of the eyelid and the eyelash level.
• After creating these incisions, he will remove any fat herniation and excess skin from the eyelids.
• The surgeon then stitches the incisions with very fine, non-resorbable stitches.

If the surgeon only treats bags under the eyes without loose skin, the conjunctival route may be advantageous. The scar is concealed in the inner lining of the eyelid.

The anaesthetic may be local or general based on your wishes and your surgeon's advice. The procedure may also be conducted with or without hospitalization, which will be decided in tandem with your anaesthesiologist and surgeon.

The blepharoplasty session lasts from half an hour to one hour depending on the surgeon and the method used.

At the end of the procedure, the initial results are already visible. Your face is going to look more relaxed, and you're going to look visibly younger by about 10 years.

The result will be optimal for three to six months after the surgery. When the skin tissue acquires its suppleness, the oedema and bruising subside. The final results will be seen one year after the scars have completely disappeared and are no longer visible.

Blepharoplasty is a permanent benefit for bags under the eyes because they never reappear. The results last about 10 years for loose skin, and then the effects of time will become visible again.
