Laser Hair Removal on the Back

Laser hair removal on the back is a procedure that progressively removes the hair.

Today, all phototypes can be treated, from light skin to dark skin, even though the hairs should be brown or black. To be effective, the laser beam requires the melanin contained in the hair. It is the melanin that makes it possible to turn the energy of the laser into heat in order to eliminate the hair. When it contains little to no melanin, as in the case of red hair, very light blond, white or gray, laser hair removal is not efficient.

In humans, the back is an area that may be very hairy. The hairs on the back do not have the same characteristics depending on their location:

• Upper back: pigmented and dense.
• Lower back and sides: clear and small.

In both cases, the doctor must avoid areas of fine hair in order to avoid stimulation. It is possible to remove the hair on the back entirely or only a part such as the shoulders or the lower back.

The number of sessions for the back vary based on the extent of the area. In general, it will take between 6 and 8 sessions to permanently remove the hair. Each session lasts between 40 and 60 minutes and should be spaced about 6 weeks apart before the regrowth is noticeable.

A first consultation is required before the session, so that your doctor can examine your hair and skin to adjust the intensity of the laser. They also questions you about your ancestry and can identify possible contraindications.

On the day of the treatment, the doctor will re-examine you in order to make the final adjustment of the system and to confirm that the area has been shaved.

You and the practitioner must wear protective glasses. After setting the device, the doctor performs a test on a small area of your body.

He then proceeds to scan the area using the laser fitted with a cryogenic system that enables to calm the pain by the diffusion of a cold liquid.

At the end of the session, a moisturizer is applied to your skin to soothe redness, discomfort and itching.

The first results of laser hair removal are visible after a couple of weeks. The hair will then fall off and the development will be more and more slow over the sessions and the hair will become thinner and thinner.

The patient will shave the treated area between sessions. On the other hand, they must stop any form of waxing, electric razors or tweezers. If the patient misses one of their hair removal sessions, the final result will be postponed, but the benefits of prior sessions will not be lost.

Approximately 90 percent of the patient's hair does not grow back at the end of treatment. However, small growth may be noticed and maintenance sessions are planned every year to preserve the benefits of hair removal.
